Ivy Bennett stormed into the back of the trailer. She'd had enough. More than enough. For the last five years, she'd lived in this small, forsaken place outside Las Vegas, surviving on the edge of existence. Her job as a waitress at the local bar paid well, but it was hard-earned money, and she was sick of her boyfriend drinking away almost every penny.
"What are you doing, Ivy?"
Her eyes narrowed furiously. "I'm leaving Dylan. I need more than this." She waved her hand in a circle around the inside of the trailer. "I deserve more than this," she added with emphasis.
"Honey," Dylan said gently as he reached out for her. "Let's talk about this." With a hardly noticeable move, he chucked the can of beer in the bin. "I'm having a bit of a low, but I need you to get through this."

Excerpt:
As an author of any genre, you build worlds. You create a setting for characters and make it realistic for them. Whether you write Regency, Medieval Fantasy, Futuristic, or pure Science Fiction, you build worlds. While I don't claim to be an authority on the subject, as a reader and as a writer I have strong opinions, and I'm willing to share them. I'll also share tips on how I created my worlds and make recommendations for you to create yours. I hope they'll prove helpful.
The number one suggestion I have for you is to be organized. If you don't take time to do this, you risk mistakes, repeating details, losing information, and contradicting your own story. If you give a character a scar over his left eye, and later it migrates to over the right eye, you might miss that. But will your readers? If an event occurred prior to the great war of (fill in the blank), but you mention later it happened twenty years after the war... will your readers notice? Too many of these things and readers give up on finishing the book. The best way to make sure you keep details straight is to record every detail of your story world and its characters.
How do you record those kinds of details and keep them straight? That's what this book is all about.

Twenty-two-year-old Sophie Levesque has been guardian to eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother's death a few years ago. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is though, they don't know or have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator, and Sophie is afraid it's all been a mistake.
As Mia settles well into her new school and life in general, Sophie is not only occupied by her search of what connected her to Clara, but also her new studies and the two men, who suddenly have become part of her daily life - Mark O'Connor, the lawyer representing Clara's estate, and Zach, the hunk from across the road.

Today's hook :-)

Mr. O'Connor cleared his throat. “So what are the suitcases all about?”
Taken by surprise by this sudden start of a conversation, Sophie looked up and gazed back at him through the mirror. She wondered how old he might be. Even though Mr. O’Connor was dressed up neatly in a grey suit with a matching tie, his tousled blond hair gave him a casual look. But then her gaze went down to her hand in Mia’s lap, holding onto her sister.
“Just making conversation.”
He checked the traffic as he moved into another lane, but their gaze met again in the mirror. His expression told her that he was still waiting for an answer.
Good grief.
“I have already told you. Considering what we’ve inherited we brought along everything.”

Sophie and Mark are an irresistible match from the beginning. While getting closer and connected to them individually as the story progressed, I couldn't help but want them to be together. This author has a way of endearing her characters and it is easy to fall in love with them. An intriguing story with emotion, love and hope. A very enjoyable read! Jared was able to follow the GPS and make it out of Los Angles alive and in one piece. Not that hard, he thought. Somewhere close to San Bernardino, he stopped to stock up for food and then made his way up through the San Bernardino National Forest towards Vegas. He knew it'd be a long drive on the first day, but he was sure he'd make it. He felt a bit weary, but the excitement of driving through America for four weeks in the little motorhome kept him wide-awake in anticipation.

The library staff had provided him with piles of books and website addresses to find out where to go and what to see. Vegas hadn't been on many of those lists, but had always been mentioned as a You're there, you might as well go and have a look. And that was what he was going to do. He drove along, humming along to the American country music blaring from the radio. There wasn't much to see in this vast part of California, and Jared was pleased when he finally made it to Vegas later that afternoon, found an RV Park and checked in.
Jared paid and was about to leave when he turned and asked, "Mate, what on earth is PedXing?"
The guy chuckled. "Pedestrian crossing," he replied.

Jared laughed. "Yeah, I don't think I would've guessed that one. I'm glad they told me to look for RV and not caravan park."

#Bookreview: Nora Roberts "Northern Lights"

Publisher: Putnam Adult

ISBN: 978-0399152054

My rating: 3/5

Lunacy was Nate Burke's last chance. As a Baltimore cop, he'd watched his partner die on the street-and the guilt still haunts him. With nowhere else to go, he accepts the job as Chief of Police in this tiny, remote Alaskan town. Aside from sorting out a run-in between a couple of motor vehicles and a moose, he finds his first weeks on the job are relatively quiet. But just as he wonders whether this has been all a big mistake, an unexpected kiss on New Year's Eve under the brilliant Northern Lights of the Alaska sky lifts his spirit and convinces him to stay just a little longer.

Meg Galloway, born and raised in Lunacy, is used to being alone. She was a young girl when her father disappeared, and she has learned to be independent, flying her small plane, living on the outskirts of town with just her huskies for company. After her New Year's kiss with the Chief of Police, she allows herself to give in to passion-while remaining determined to keep things as simple as possible. But there's something about Nate's sad eyes that gets under her skin and warms her frozen heart.

And now, things in Lunacy are heating up. Years ago, on one of the majestic mountains shadowing the town, a crime occurred that is unsolved to this day-and Nate suspects that a killer still walks the snowy streets. His investigation will unearth the secrets and suspicions that lurk beneath the placid surface, as well as bring out the big-city survival instincts that made him a cop in the first place. And his discovery will threaten the new life-and the new love-that he has finally found for himself.

My thoughts

I picked up this book purely by the fact that it's set in Alaska ... and I wasn't disappointed in that regards.

Nate Burke takes the job as Chief of Police in a little place called Lunacy. As fate has it, they find a dead body, which has been missing for 16 years, and have another death soon after. Instincts kick in and Nate starts investigating.

I would've liked the story a lot more, a whole lot more, if the characters had been better developed. They seemed all to be of extremes, except Nate. I wasn't able to warm up to any of them.

“Thank you, Mr. O’Connor,” she replied as she blew out a breath. “What about our stuff?” Mia whispered to Sophie. Sophie moved her head to look down at her sister, but before she had a chance to say anything, he beat her to it. “What stuff?” he asked as he opened the door.

“Considering what we inherited here, we brought all our things,” Sophie explained without looking at him. The attorney stopped in his tracks. “All, as in all your clothes?”

Sophie’s eyes met his. She emitted a small sigh, but tried to keep her composure. It was something she had learnt over the last few years. Standing straight, she corrected him. “All, as in all our belongings.”

It took half an hour or more to finally get a taxi, and Jared was on his way.

Jared looked out the window towards the sky. But it wasn't the sky he knew from home. It looked a bit like Hobart's sky on a hot summer's day with a nasty front approaching. Like there had been a fire, and the smoke was still lingering.

He'd asked the taxi driver to get him to the motorhome company in Hawthorne. He shook his head at the idea of having flown over the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn twenty-four hours earlier, only to end up in a place called Hawthorne again. The drive was surprisingly short and pleasant. The traffic he had expected wasn't there, but nonetheless he stared in amazement at the amount of lanes on the freeway. There were four on each side. And they still had traffic jams! His tired eyes took in the surroundings, the suburbs, the houses, and the many things that were so similar to Australia… yet so different.

May I introduce: Barbara White Daille "Honourable Rancher" #MFRWAuthor @BarbaraWDaille

Thank you to Iris for inviting me here to share a peek at Honourable Rancher, onHone of my Flagman's Folly stories, now available in electronic format in Australia!

Honourable Rancher

A Best Friend's Vow

The hero of Flagman's Folly has been gone more than a year. But he still stands between Ben Sawyer and what he desires most—Dana Wright, the love of Ben's life.
When soldier Paul Wright left for the last time, he made his best friend promise to look after his wife and kids. Ben—good, steady Ben—is honoring that promise. And it's burning him up inside.
Because Dana is shutting Ben out. She wants him—so much—but she can't afford to give in. If she does, she'll spill her secret, and the betrayal will hurt everyone she cares about—her children, who loved their daddy; her town, which loves its hero; and Ben, who loved his friend. She'll do anything to protect her secret—even give up her second chance at happiness.

Excerpt:
Ben and Dana are both members of their friends' wedding party.  At the reception, a chance encounter in the garden of the banquet hall soon has Dana running away and Ben longing to follow her.
She had grown quiet again, and Ben gestured toward the fountain.  "What brought you out here?  Wanting to make a wish?"
She shook her head.  "No.  Those are for people who aren't willing to work hard to get what they want."
"I can't argue with you there."  Still, he felt tempted to toss a coin into the water for a wish of his own—that for once, she'd let him make things easier for her.  "But there's such a thing as working too hard, you know."
"Ben, please."  She gathered up her dress and stood.  "You called the truce yourself, remember?  I know you only want to help.  For Paul.  And because we're friends."  Her voice shook from her stress on the word.  "We've had this conversation before.  Now, once and for all, I'm doing fine."  As if to prove her point, she smiled.  "And I have to go inside.  Tess will be tossing her bouquet soon.  I wouldn't want to lose out on that."
A tear sparkled at the corner of her eye.
Missing the chance to catch a handful of flowers couldn't upset her that much.  He knew what she really missed—having a husband by her side.  Her husband.
His best friend.
But neither of them would have Paul back in their lives.
Before he could get to his feet, she left, running away like that princess in the fairytale his niece asked him to read to her over and over again.
No, not a princess.  The one who took off without her glass slipper—Cinderella.
Dana was no Cinderella.  She hadn't left a shoe behind.  Hadn't even dropped a button from that pink dress as something for him to remember her by.  As if he could ever forget her.
She'd been the heroine of a story he'd once created long ago, a story he'd had to write in his head because he hadn't yet known how to spell all the words.
How did it go?  Like in his niece's storybook...
Once upon a time, that was it.
Once upon a time, in the Land of Enchantment—otherwise known as the state of New Mexico—Benjamin Franklin Sawyer had high hopes and a huge crush on the girl who sat one desk over from him in their classroom every day.
No other girl in town, Ben felt sure, could beat Dana Smith, and most likely no other woman in the world could compare to her, either.  In any case, without a doubt, she was the cutest of all his female friends in their kindergarten classroom.
Unfortunately, when the teacher moved his best friend, Paul Wright, to the desk on the other side of Dana's, Ben saw his hopes dashed.
The crush, however, continued.  For a good long while.

“Ally? Hey, what’s up? You got real quiet all of a sudden. Not a good quiet, either. What are you thinking?”
I shook my head. “No, it’s nothing. I get it. I understand.”
He looked at me for minute and then sighed. He got up and came around to my side of the booth and took me in his arms and kissed the top of my head. “You’ve got that look on your face. You know, the one that says you think I’m not going to be able to handle any more weird stuff and this is it for us. Huh? Admit it—it’s what you were thinking, isn’t it?” I nodded, trying to keep the tears in. “Okay, look at me.” He pulled my face up to look directly in my eyes. I could stare into his beautiful, deep brown eyes all day. “First, and most importantly, I love you, Ally. I’m in this for the long haul, no matter how freaky things get. If it means I get you, then count me in. You gotta start believing in us, babe.” He stopped to kiss me briefly and thank the waitress for refilling our coffee cups. “Secondly, you’re giving me, and all guys in general actually, way too much credit for deep thinking. When I say ‘what the hell is an oracle?’ that’s all I mean. No hidden meaning. I just want to know what it is. Guys are actually pretty simple and we tend to say exactly what we mean.” He kissed me again and then returned to his side of the table, placing a napkin in my hand so I could mop my face. Poor guy: it seems like all he ever did was watch me cry. I was such a girl. “Now let’s finish eating while you tell me all about this oracle stuff, okay?”
So I wiped my eyes and told him about how the Seer Council had tricked me into believing they were simply a group of innocent little old lady gardeners, but they actually held my fate in their hands. I told him about the last Oracle being stolen away from her people by the Gaulish clan, never to be heard from again. And I told him how the council was very interested in my abilities to see the future and seemed to think it was possible evidence of my oracle-ness or whatever. I finished with, “And they didn’t want to even let me go. They made me promise to come back over spring break and in the summer.”
“Spring break? Ah, Ally, no. I can’t stand not having our last school vacation together. You gotta tell them no, querida. I’ll probably go nuts if you’re gone.”
“Don’t worry. There is no way I’m going back over spring break. I’ll go in the summer as long as it’s while you’re gone to basic training.” I grabbed his hand across the table and rubbed my thumb over his knuckles. I told him what the council had told me about oracles, how they were messengers between worlds or something.
“Ally, what do you think? Do you think you could be this oracle?” He looked at me with concern.
“I don’t know, Jack. I think there’s a lot more to the story than what they’re telling me. I don’t trust those little old garden-seer ladies. I can’t even think about being an Oracle before I know what’s really going on.”
“That was a very Oracle-like thing to say,” he said with a laugh.
“Shut up.” I smiled. “Does this lunch include pie?”

~ EXCERPT ~

It was time to pull myself together and slink out of this bathroom to face Jack; if he was even waiting for me. He most likely lost interest and retreated back to class. I splashed water on my face and tried vainly to tame my obnoxious, curly red hair and exited the bathroom. To my surprise, Jack was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets, staring at the ground. He looked up and smiled slightly at me, one corner of his attractive mouth inching higher than the other. His big, nearly black eyes were full of concern as he asked, “You feeling better? I thought maybe you were gonna puke all over the place back there.”
Perfect. Exactly what I wanted him to think of in connection with me: the girl who looked like she was going to puke. “No, I’m fine. I needed to get away from the Wikipedia re-hash, that’s all. Thanks for the escape.” I tried to scoot by him.
He laughed a bit under his breath and reached out, gently grabbing my arm as I passed. “Hey, don’t run off. You looked really upset. I want to make sure you’re all right. Besides, Ms. Gonzalez thinks we’re at the nurse. No need to rush back for more coma-inducing book reports. I’m Jack, by the way. Jack Ruiz.” He pulled me directly in front of him and again examined my face. An intoxicating aroma wafted to me from his warm skin; a sort of warm, spicy scent that instantly became my new favorite. I might have swayed toward him a bit.
“Yeah, I know, Jack. I’ve been handing your papers back all semester.” I struggled to sound unaffected.
He nodded. “You still look really pale, Ally. And you seem a bit unsteady. Sure you’re not gonna puke?”
Really? Why me, God? I stood up straight and gently shrugged off his hand. “Yes. I had a, uh…a moment. I’m okay. Thanks for getting me out of there.” His dark eyes looked like melted dark chocolate. Life is so not fair. On the bright side, he actually knows my name. I wouldn’t have bet on that. I’m not the kind of girl who stands out—well, except for the crazy red hair—or attracts much attention. I’m short and small, wear really plain clothes, and I don’t say very much at school. I have a few good friends and we pretty much fly below the radar and try to stay out of the limelight. I like it that way. High school seriously sucks and I just want to get through it quietly and without a lot of drama. Please, God, life will be better in college.
“So, this is gonna sound pretty weird,” Jack started hesitantly, “but, uh, when it got really hot in the classroom, it, well it kinda felt like it was, uh, emanating from you.” He laughed once, quietly. “That’s crazy, huh?”
Wow. Did he just use the word “emanating” in a sentence? Who does that? I mean, in high school? I wonder what he got on his ACT? I had always had the sense there was more to him than meets the eye, and this cemented that feeling.
