Plotting and Planning--a #Writing Manual, Just in Time for #NaNoWriMo! ( @suzdemello #MFRWAuthor #iamwriting)

Hey there, aspiring authors! Ever wondered how an author plots and writes a book?

Wonder no more! Suzie deMello is here to tell you the secrets, or at least a few of them.

Plotting and Planning is Suzie’s second writing treatise, following the best-selling Write This, Not That!

Here’s the blurb:

Another engaging, witty writing primer from Suz deMello, whose Write This, Not That! was an Amazon bestseller. Plotting, point of view, character creation, conflict and much more are examined in this brief but pithy writing manual.  A must for the serious writer who wants the basics without boredom.

Says bestselling author Kylie Brant: “Sue has written a concise manual that is valuable for both beginning and seasoned writers. Going to write a book? Read this first!”

Here’s an excerpt to pique your interest:
How does an author write a book?

Unfortunately for aspiring authors, this is not an easy question to answer. It's tantamount to asking, Where do authors get their ideas? which, believe me, is our least favorite question. I often tell people I get them at Sears—they're sold by the dozen in the basement between the barbecues and the bikes.
In reality, I get my ideas from almost anywhere. Maybe a magazine article about a place or event. Perhaps someone I meet or something a person says may trigger a train of thought that will eventually lead to a book. Maybe travel to someplace new ignites the creative spark that will inspire me.

Here's a better question: What are the building blocks of plot and story?

Excerpt:
 How to start your book
Writing a book starts long before you open your new journal, or begin a new document on your computer and type "Chapter One." You need to have read a lot of books, and I don't mean craft works like this manual. Read, but not just anything.
Aspiring writers are often told, "read in your genre." But Faulkner said, "Read, read, read. Read everything—trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window."
I don't completely agree with the above advice. Mine is: Read well-written books.
What books are they? Try using the internet to search for lists of the best books ever written in English, or whatever language in which you're planning to write. Do not read translated books. While many are great, you want to read excellent books by those who have mastered all aspects of writing. Book translators possess extremely refined skills, and writing an original work from start to "the end" is not often among them.
Be selective. While reading works such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in the original middle English may be interesting and educational, you want to read books that are written in the version of English we use, so as to accustom your ear and your mind to modern, grammatically correct language.
Exceptions are the King James Bible and just about anything written by William Shakespeare. These should sit at the top of your reading list as they're probably the most influential works written in the English language.
In her excellent writing manual, Starting from Scratch, Rita Mae Brown provides an lengthy list of very good books. Same with Stephen King in On Writing, though his list is (blessedly) shorter, and is more individual—he describes his list as "the best books I've read over the last three or four years." (Brown's list starts with Caedmon's Hymn, a poem from about 665 A.D., and ends with Anthony Burgess's Earthly Powers, 1981).
The purpose of extensive reading is not to entertain but to enlighten. Pay attention to what you're reading. Read books that call to you more than once, to figure out why they're compelling. Look at the big picture aspects first: character and conflict, plot and story. During the next reading you can analyze narrower mechanical concerns such as word choice and sentence structure. Ask yourself, "How does this writer use these tools to elicit a particular reaction from the reader?"

May I introduce: Kathy Bosman "His Halloween Kisses"

His Halloween Kisses
by Kathy Bosman

My guest today is fellow Astraea Press Kathy Bosman, who has just released her latest book "His Halloween Kisses". The obvious question for me was about a Halloween tradition in South Africa.

1 - I love the blurb. How did you come up with the idea for "His Halloween Kisses"
The idea partly sprang from my own experience house-sitting. I also wanted to explore the idea of kissing a stranger and a relationship developing from there.

2 - Tell us a bit about Halloween in South Africa
We don't celebrate Halloween much here yet. Because of high crime, we don't do trick or treating. No one wants their kids to stop off at strangers' houses to ask for treats. I was very disappointed this year that there weren't any decorations or special Halloween treats in any of the shops at all. Last year, there was quite a bit so I thought it was starting to happen. Seems not. It's more popular in the big cities as they decorate their homes and have parties.

3 - Tell us a bit about your current project.
I've just started a book which will be the first part of a four-book series called The Album. Ella inherits a magic antique album from her great-uncle. It has the ability to show the future life of a couple - lights up with images of them together and how their relationship will turn out. For matchmaker, Ella, it's a true gift, but she's also resistant to love in her own life. She has three close friends, Pauline, Carol and Andrea who each take turns to use The Album. The subsequent books are their stories. Each one is mostly how they find love while using The Album as a matchmaking tool.

Blurb:

Ali’s never been so scared. She’s housesitting for a colleague on Halloween night, but the lights have gone out, and terrible noises and crashes send her imagination into overdrive. When her brother’s friend comes to her rescue, he kisses her in the dark three times. Once back in the light, Ali is embarrassed at allowing him to kiss her. Byron tries to ignore his strong attraction for Ali, especially seeing he’s not ready for a relationship. When Ali finds out why, she runs away, but life has other plans. What can bring them together? Fate, faith, or the memory of his Halloween kisses?

Author:

Kathy loves reading and writing even more. She homeschools her three kids, so in between unsuccessfully explaining the difference between subject and predicate or how to divide fractions, she enters an imaginary world of troubled and passionate characters whose stories take over the page. Kathy lives in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, where the summers are hot, the winters cool, and bugs thrive. Her first published novel, Wedding Gown Girl, came out in 2012 with Astraea Press. She belongs to the Romance Writers of South Africa Group (ROSA) which has been her greatest support and inspiration the last few years.

Excerpt:

“I’m not scared anymore,” she added quickly. He must think her an utter blow-over.

“I’m glad.” He rubbed her arm, and she so longed to receive a hug from him, take in his shape and drink in his warmth. He seemed easy to talk to, like the suffocating loneliness had leaked away for a brief moment. She hadn’t realized how lonely she’d been the last few months until now.

They sat silent for several minutes.

The wind creaked the windows, and another sound of something falling echoed from down the passage.

“What was that?”

“I don’t know.” She laughed. “Somehow it seems less scary with you around.”

“Sounds scary to me. I’m going to investigate.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Then I’m taking you home.”

Her face heated. Taking her home as his girlfriend?

“But before I do that…” He found her face with his hands and pressed his warm lips against hers. “I’ve wanted to do that for the last five minutes.”

“What about…?” He silenced her with his mouth, and she sank into him as he pulled her close in an embrace.

He jerked away, leaving her empty-handed and frustrated.

“I’m sorry. I’m being a total louse. I don’t know what’s got into me. If Simon knew how I was looking after his sister… I think kissing you seems to get my mind off all the horrible things like noises in this creepy house and work stresses.”

“Me too.”

Get hooked on "Love Will Find You"

Welcome to another MFRWHook!

"Love Will Find You" is set in Australia, a small coastal town in
New South Wales as well as in Melbourne.

I hope you get hooked by this Snippet

BLURB:
After his father’s heart attack, Australian Football League player Tyson Gaspaldi takes his parents on holiday to a small place at the New South Wales coast.
One morning, following a surfing session, he comes across a crying woman on the beach. Everything about her intrigues him, and he can’t walk away. She’s not only sexy and humble, but, as he soon finds out, vulnerable as well.
It’s only been a few months since Katie Cassidy lost her sister in a car accident.
Still overwhelmed by the loss, a chance encounter on the beach with an attractive stranger awakens unexpected emotions inside her. She’s instantly drawn to his caring nature, but also his looks.
However, Tyson’s past quickly catches up with them, causing Katie’s childhood demons to return, and the road to romance becomes anything but smooth.

Today's hook :-)

“Honey,” Teagan said calmly. “Don’t put yourself down. So what, he plays AFL. He obviously knows what to look for in a girl. He stopped that day at the beach, which means he cared. If he were some rich happy-go-lucky gigolo, he would’ve ignored you.”
“What are you saying? He’s not getting married?”
Teagan leaned back into the seat and with a smirk on her face said, “That, my dear, is a mystery to be solved."

4 Stars:
I really enjoyed this book. The main characters popped off the pages right from the start and the author sprinkled a fun and quirky set of secondary characters throughout.

4 Stars:
If you’re looking for a character-led romantic read with realistic emotion, then I can definitely recommend Love Will Find You.

Review: Robyn Carr "The Newcomer"

My rating

I think I've previously added a description of a page turner according to Wikipedia ... this one was another one for me.
For anybody wanting to read this book, I'd say it's not a light summer read, but a crash course in psychology. Teenage heartache, bullying, gambling, grieving ... the book has it all.
Cooper, "The Wanderer" in book one has settled in Thunder Point and is now "The Newcomer" in town. This book starts where it left off in the first book - the relationship between him and Sarah.
The rest of the book is like a rollercoaster ride - Cooper gets news from his former girlfriend who is dying, Sarah has decisions to make regarding her job, Mac's ex-wife comes back to town, while Gina deals with her daughter's teenage heartache.

No doubt, the story is well written and although all the above topics are sensitive ones, Robyn Carr dealt with each issue with a lot of respect. I have to admit, at times it was a bit too much and overwhelming, but the careful approach of the problems moved the story along smoothly.

If you're prepared for the somewhat "heavier" storyline, this is a great read!

May I introduce: S.Briones Lim "Palace Hills"

Palace Hills
by S. Briones Lim

Fellow Limitless Publishing Author S. Briones Lim is visiting today to talk about her latest book "Palace Hills".

1 - The blurb for "Palace Hill" sounds intriguing. How did you come up with the idea?
I actually came up with the story eight years ago when I was in my early twenties. It was inspired by different music, movies and other interests I had at that time (*cough* James Franco *cough* Channing Tatum *cough*). For some reason or another I had put off writing the story until early 2014. By the time I wrote it, certain plot points and characters had changed significantly from my original story. However, the premise remained the same :)

2 - You describe yourself "as a self-renowned bookworm". What kind of books would we find on your book shelf?
I'm a sucker for New Adult and Paranormal Romances. However, I do enjoy Dystopian novels as well as a little Sci-Fi here and there. Given my love for all things that go bump in the night, you'll certainly find some horror stories -- specifically, TRUE ghost stories!

3 - Tell us a bit about your current project.
I have a book in the works with my publisher (Limitless Publishing) which is a Contemporary Romance. I'm really excited about it and can't wait for its release. At the moment I am also writing a New Adult novel inspired by my husband. He's getting a kick out of it!

Blurb:

Choosing to leave Conner behind, Nina vows never to return to Palace Hills again...
Five years later, Nina has a new home, a new boyfriend and a new life. Yet, still broken by the ghosts of her past, Nina finds she must return to Palace Hills to put an end to a nightmare, which has haunted her for years.

Excerpt:

The sharp bite of the cold car window did little to snap me out of my melancholic daze. I pressed my forehead against the glass, ignoring the stray strands of hair that matted against my skin. I gazed out the window and quickly became lost in the scenery around me. The rush of buildings soon turned to trees and subsequently to bland colored houses and power lines. It was like the beginning of a bad fairy tale, yet somehow I knew there would be no happily ever after to my story.

Too fast.

It was all happening too fast. Why couldn’t we just stop the car and slow everything down? Why couldn’t things go back to normal?

I shut my eyes as if to wish everything away. In just two weeks, my life as I knew it changed completely. There had to be a way to get it all back…but how?

My eyelids were shut so tightly, it began to induce a tiny headache. I didn’t care; I needed to pray, dream and wish all I could. Yet, I knew no matter how hard I prayed, dreamt, or wished, none of them would ever come true. I also knew that when I opened my eyes we’d be in our new home, Palace Hills.

Palace Hills.

I always scoffed at the name. The never ending streets of torn up houses and rusted chain link fences looked anything but a palace. I guess the city contractor had a sense of humor, and it was probably needed considering the pathetic state of the neighborhood. At least someone could find the humor in the situation. I know I found none.
