Advice is what we ask for when we already
know the answer, but wish we didn't.”

I've moved forward a little ... Flynn McCormack is now sitting in the
hotel cafe with Teresa and William Gibbs. This is the start of their conversation.

“What is this, Teresa?” he asked without looking at her.
“There’s no reason to get testy,” Teresa countered, signalling for William to join them as he entered the cafĂ©.
“Look, I haven’t got all day. I’m very busy.”
Flynn raised his head slightly and nodded at William, who sat down opposite him. As he studied the man, he wondered if it was life with Teresa that made him look so much beyond his age. He couldn’t be older than sixty. Flynn took another sip and the corner of his mouth twitched into a grin as he remembered William’s fiftieth birthday party in the Gibbs’ backyard just outside Launceston – and his stomach ached as he thought of Sarah. It had been a while since memories had popped up in his head, but when he did, he missed her. William reminded Flynn so much of her.

♥♦♥  SYNOPSIS ♥♦♥

A blind date that doesn't happen might lead to love.

After her divorce, Jeri Belmont moved to Hobart and now runs a successful art gallery. When her niece sets her up with a neighbour, Jeri expects a blind date like the many she’s had. But she never expected her date wouldn’t even show up because of her age. Despite feeling unjustly judged, when she unexpectedly runs into him again, she finds it hard to ignore Ely’s charm.

Ely Lennox knows he shouldn’t have skipped the blind date because of the lady’s age. After all, it had only been a date, not a lifetime commitment. When his carpentry business takes him right to the woman he bailed out on, his guilt turns into regret when he finds out she’s everything a man could hope for. How can he convince Jeri that he knows acting so immaturely was a big mistake?
Will she ever forgive him? Or is she hiding behind something else?

EXCERPT:

Jeri Belmont checked the time on her watch. It was twenty past six, and they’d agreed to meet at six.
He was late!
Steaming inside, and less than impressed by her blind date, she took another sip of the Chardonnay as she gazed around the restaurant. Everyone was engulfed in their conversations, but occasionally one of the patrons glanced at her. She shrugged it off, confident in sitting on her own in the town’s most elegant restaurant.
What she couldn’t shrug off, though, was her date being late.
She drank the last little bit of her wine, paid, and left. A deep disappointment settled in the pit of her stomach, surprising her, because it hadn’t been the first time she’d been on a blind date that ended with the guy not showing up.
She suppressed a groan as she thought of the man she’d met only a few weeks earlier. Admittedly, he’d been nice, but not at all what he’d pretended to be in the details she received from the “Your Future Heart” agency.
Yet, this rejection hurt inside. Olivia had told her so much about her neighbour, and she’d trusted her niece when she’d assured he’d be there.
Olivia was Georgia’s daughter. Georgia was Jeri’s cousin, but to avoid confusion they all agreed on Olivia being her niece. Jeri loved Olivia like her own daughter and had often babysat her when she’d been younger. They’d been to movies, concerts, and Jeri had even been along to one of her niece’s trips to Melbourne to visit Olivia’s best friend Mia, who had moved across the Bass Strait.
As Jeri walked down the streets to her car, she replayed her conversation with her niece in her mind.
“How are your blind dates going?” her niece had asked as she came into Jeri’s gallery a couple of days ago.
She’d shrugged. “I have a winner’s luck getting hooked up with all the duds in town.” Jeri remembered hesitating, contemplating whether to speak the words in her head. Was she destined to live alone after her divorce? She wasn’t looking for the man of her dreams, just companionship. Someone to go out with once in a while. Someone to share her day’s highlights or nightmares with.

“You should meet the guy from next door,” Olivia said. “He’s like sex on legs. Honestly.”

Blog Tour: Rebecca Barber "Nobody Knows"

Gillian Dempsey must find a reason to go on…

Easier said than done after a rare virus robs her of both parents. Left alone and confused, the mourning nineteen-year-old flees to her three best friends, who receive her with open arms.

Her parents give her more than an inheritance—they give her a second chance at life…

When Gillian is left with some properties in her parents’ will, she assigns them to a real estate agent to manage. Joel Matthews takes the job, but he quickly becomes more than a business associate. After a string of fortunate coincidences, Gillian and Joel spend a passionate night together—after which Joel all but vanishes from her life.

But they still have unfinished business, and Gillian won’t allow him to slip away—especially with her heart.

Life is a roller coaster of tragedy and joy…

Gillian reels him in, and soon the two are married. Gillian’s heart expands even more when they receive the news of their first pregnancy. But after the baby is born, things aren’t the same. Joel becomes distant…resentful. And then the abuse begins. Darkness consumes their marriage—only to get worse.

While Gillian tries to hold her family together, it seems Joel is doing everything to tear them apart. But just one slip of his temper makes all the difference, because this time, there’s no turning back.

Maybe being abused can be endured, as long as Nobody Knows…until someone ends up dead.

Gillian

The scowl on his leathery face should have been enough warning to shut me up, but tonight I wasn’t in the mood to back down. I was ready for a fight. Whatever he dished out would come back at him twofold. He came through the door, ripping it almost off its hinges and letting it slam behind him. He took one look at me, sitting on the lounge quietly watching television and sipping my coffee, and rolled his eyes in disgust. I didn’t say a word. This was the game we played these days. After more than a decade of marriage, this is all we had left.
“What’s for dinner?” he snarled, his eyes filled with hatred and disgust. I just shrugged apathetically. What was I supposed to say? ‘Hi honey, how was your day? You look tired. Why don’t I just whip you up a nice, juicy T-bone steak and fresh steamed veggies?’ The truth was, I would probably be having home-brand crackers with what was left of the vegemite.
“Not sure. We don’t have much,” I admitted, instantly feeling ashamed.
I hated the fact that he could make me cower like that. Once upon a time, in another lifetime far away from this one, I felt different. I felt worthwhile and even happy. We were happy at one point, weren’t we? Somewhere along the line, I must have loved him. Otherwise I wouldn’t have married him. I can’t be that stupid, can I?
“For God’s sake, didn’t you even bother to do the shopping?” he snarled from the kitchen.
I heard him muttering to himself as he shuffled the near-empty boxes about in the pantry. Much as I hate to admit it, the profanity spraying from his lips was mighty impressive.
Stomping back into the lounge, he planted himself deliberately in front of the television, hands on his hips and a scowl on his face. Knowing what was coming, I was glad the kids were out with their godmother Heidi tonight. That was the only positive in this nightmare.
“For fuck’s sake, Gillian. I give you money. What the fucking hell do you spend it on?” he demanded, tiny bits of spittle flying from his mouth.
We had danced around this confrontation for weeks now. The tension was escalating, as was the hatred buried inside me. I don’t remember the last time that I had actually had a full night’s sleep. These days, I was too angry to sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, all I could do was imagine all the things that I wanted to do and say to him, but was too afraid to.
My life had somehow crumpled into a pathetic mess, and most of the time I hated myself for it. I was furious, and the more I saw of him, the more he continued to be the heartless barbaric bastard he had become, the worse things got, and the more I despised myself.
“Do you really want to know how fucking far your measly twenty bucks stretches these days?” I asked, keeping my face as blank as possible. He raised a quizzical eyebrow and folded his arms aggressively across his puffed out chest.
I took a deep breath, grabbed hold of the arms of my chair with both hands, and squeezed as hard as I could. When I looked down, my knuckles were white with the strain and I could hear myself grinding my teeth desperately, trying to control the rage inside me.
“Well?” he snapped, shifting his weight impatiently from one foot to another.
I exhaled heavily. “If you really want to know what happened to that twenty you gave me a week ago for food and to keep the house running, well, it bought a six-pack of home brand toilet paper, a loaf of bread, a carton of milk, vegemite, eggs, and a packet of tampons for your daughter!” I told him, ticking the items off my fingers as I announced them.

Rebecca, one of four kids to her parents who are both primary school teachers, was born in Wollongong on the south coast of Australia before moving to the country with her family. After a few years of embracing all that country life had to offer, the family relocated to Port Macquarie with its white sand beaches. After a brief period enjoying the sun and the surf they finally settled in Canberra where Rebecca still lives today. But all through her childhood a notepad and a book where never far away. These days Rebecca is an avid reader, and when she isn’t buried in a book or cheering on her beloved football team she’s spending time with her husband Robert and their overly spoilt dog Levi.

Chocolates and Cyanide
by  Mike Lord

Blurb:
A box of milk chocolates is delivered to a man just before he leaves to fly to work in Botswana.  He does not open it and just tucks it into his packed suitcase.  His suitcase is delivered in error to a lady passenger in Johannesburg, who helps herself to one of the chocolates and dies of acute cyanide poisoning!
A concerted effort by the police in South Africa and England have to determine who was the intended victim, and who placed the cyanide in the chocolates, but the identities keep them mystified until they find who purchased the chocolates, and who stole the cyanide.  The activities of a string quartette throws up several red herrings…

Excerpt:
Just Aziza was getting into bed she decided to open her suitcase.  The heavy duty plastic zip fastener was easy, and the top folded back.
The brown paper parcel immediately attracted her, and she didn’t really look at the other items on the top of the suitcase.  She didn’t bother to read the name on the label and just opened the brown paper parcel, only to find a box of milk chocolates, not really wondering who would have given her such a present.
She just had to open the box, and cut the cellophane seal around the edge with a knife from her kitchen.  She knew that the chocolates would be laid out nicely, but was surprised to find one slightly larger than the others in the centre of the tray, almost winking at her.
There was no foil wrapping just the chocolate with a design on the top.  She could not help herself but picked it up and put it whole into her mouth.
As she bit into it the taste was a bit strange;
“Apples,” she thought, and then “almonds,” came to her mind.
She lay back on her bed to rest and enjoy the chocolate.

She was dead when they found her in the morning, with the open box of chocolates sitting on the top of her unpacked open suitcase.

Happy "Book Hook" Day
May I 'hook' you on
"Let Me Love You"?

"Let Me Love You" is set in Melbourne, in the wonderful country of Australia.

I hope you get hooked by this Snippet

Today's hook
She followed his finger towards the pocket of her jacket, only to find the acrylic heart-shaped key ring that held a photo of Jason hanging outside. Taking the keys, she whispered, “Thanks,” towards him and then pushed the button to unlock the car. Oliver still stared at her, but she wasn’t going there. Some things were better left unsaid.
Hell, if she could explain it in three words she might have, but many of her friends had already given up understanding. Words like ‘you need to move on’ or ‘not all men are bad’ had come up frequently in most conversations she’d had over the last year. And she knew. Every fibre in her knew, but her subconscious told her to stay away from everyone.
“You okay?”
It took her a second, and a lot of strength, to meet his gaze again. Again, she was surprised how much her body responded. Yet, it was unlike any response she’d had towards men over the last few months. Yes, her hands were trembling as usual, but there was also a little flutter in her stomach. Heat crept into her cheeks. There was a hint of concern in his green eyes, and she studied him for a brief moment. The beginning of a smile tipped the corners of his mouth, and she quickly turned to open the car door.

“I’m working on it,” she finally said.

Blurb:
Oliver Dempsey, pitcher for a Melbourne baseball club, loves the women, and they love him…
But he keeps them at an arm’s length, and when he meets Tamara, he’s unprepared for the attraction he feels for her. Told by his coach that she’s off limits, only draws him in more.
Tamara Amis moved to Melbourne to find some distance between her past and herself…
With the help of her uncle, the coach of a Melbourne baseball club, she quickly finds a job, and a place to live. Yet, one meeting with the handsome pitcher stirs unexpected emotions that threaten to overwhelm her.
It’s Oliver’s injury that brings them together, but as they find out about each other’s pasts, how can they be ready to share a future?

5 Stars
This is the first book I read by author. I really enjoyed this book. I will have to read book 1 in this series. You can read this as a standalone

4 Stars
Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I was more than happy to read Let Me Love You – but each book stands alone and you don't have to have read one to understand the other. Nor do you have to know baseball inside-out to follow the story!

Oliver and Tamara appear to be opposites in the way they live life – he outgoing, she nervy and insular after a recent tragedy. And yet both choose to keep people at arm's length and neither are looking for romantic involvement. The attraction they feel for each other is initially unwanted but ultimately can't be ignored.

When Oliver is injured, he must reevaluate his career and his attitude to relationships, just as Tamara must decide the best way to forge forward rebuilding her life.

This is an enjoyable romance exploring the way two people cope with loss and tragedy in different ways, with likeable secondary characters adding variety and humor.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
