There was nothing left to do but give in. “Okay, I’ll be right back.” She picked up the glass of water and made her way through the masses back again to Alex.
“This guy just invited me for a drink,” she said to Alex.
“Who?”
Hollie glanced uneasily over her shoulder. “Jeremy.”
“Great. So what are you doing here then?” Alex teased. “Off you go, this is your chance. He is quite a hunk, isn’t he?”
“I’d appreciate a bit of help here, Alex. What am I supposed to do?”
Alex shook her head. “You’re nuts, Hollie. Look at him. A dream of a man. And...if all else fails, at least you saved some money on a lemon vodka.” Alex grinned mischievously at her and pushed her off the seats. “Go, for heaven’s sake. You’re beautiful, intelligent, and all the other things. Just go.”
So Hollie returned to Jeremy, who was talking to another guy. Her heart thudded loudly, and she wasn’t all that sure about this idea anymore. When Jeremy saw her stepping closer, though,
he broke into a leisurely smile.
“Here’s your drink.” He handed over the lemon vodka.
“Thanks.” Hollie was so nervous she was hardly able to speak, let alone think about what to say to him.

  1. I'm glad Hollie decided to take a chance! Enjoyed the excerpt, could really visualize the scene from your description. Great snippet!

    1. I vaguely remember getting free drinks that way, but it'd be too scary nowadays, unfortunately. Thanks for stopping by Jennifer.

  3. I always thought that if you feel super nervous near a guy, it's not supposed to be. I used to get myself sick with nerves. Anyway, I hope it works for her.

  4. I've apparently spent too much time around the dregs of society. LOL All I could think of is that you should never leave your drink unattended where someone else can add something to it. Lemon vodka with a shot of Rohypnol, anyone?

    I loved Alex's lines, though.

    1. Oh definitely, PT, I agree. I remember when i wrote it that I had EXACTLY the same thoughts, but the "he" is a friend of a friend in the story, and it's set in Tasmania ... life's still good on that little island :-)

  5. I agree with P.T. I'd never leave my drink for someone I don't know to hand to me, too many predators out there. I do love that Alex is encouraging her to take a chance, and I'm sure this is a happy occurrence and not the more sinister one I'm picturing. Good snippet, Iris.

    1. Thanks Siobhan ... shame though, isn't it, that we live in a society where we're now suspicious of anybody and everything.

  6. East to visualize. You did a great job of showing the scene. And I think you've done a stellar job of exposing her insecurity, making her someone who the reader can relate to. Who hasn't felt that way at some point? :-)

  9. I like Alex already as a character. But I'm not sure I would have taken the drink after leaving it there. Especially from a stranger guy. Guess we shall see how this meeting plays out.

    1. Thanks :-) I loved Alex's character as well ... and have had the best intentions going back to give her her own story. Perhaps one day.
