FRESH BEGINNINGS
We continue with Fresh Beginnings, Jared's story as he travels through five states
in the US in a Motorhome. I used our itinerary from our US travels two years ago
and wrote a romance story around in.
Jared has just arrived in the US.
Enjoy!

Jared was able to follow the GPS and make it out of Los Angles alive and in one piece. Not that hard, he thought. Somewhere close to San Bernardino, he stopped to stock up for food and then made his way up through the San Bernardino National Forest towards Vegas. He knew it'd be a long drive on the first day, but he was sure he'd make it. He felt a bit weary, but the excitement of driving through America for four weeks in the little motorhome kept him wide-awake in anticipation.

The library staff had provided him with piles of books and website addresses to find out where to go and what to see. Vegas hadn't been on many of those lists, but had always been mentioned as a You're there, you might as well go and have a look. And that was what he was going to do. He drove along, humming along to the American country music blaring from the radio. There wasn't much to see in this vast part of California, and Jared was pleased when he finally made it to Vegas later that afternoon, found an RV Park and checked in.
Jared paid and was about to leave when he turned and asked, "Mate, what on earth is PedXing?"
The guy chuckled. "Pedestrian crossing," he replied.

Jared laughed. "Yeah, I don't think I would've guessed that one. I'm glad they told me to look for RV and not caravan park."

It took half an hour or more to finally get a taxi, and Jared was on his way.

Jared looked out the window towards the sky. But it wasn't the sky he knew from home. It looked a bit like Hobart's sky on a hot summer's day with a nasty front approaching. Like there had been a fire, and the smoke was still lingering.

He'd asked the taxi driver to get him to the motorhome company in Hawthorne. He shook his head at the idea of having flown over the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn twenty-four hours earlier, only to end up in a place called Hawthorne again. The drive was surprisingly short and pleasant. The traffic he had expected wasn't there, but nonetheless he stared in amazement at the amount of lanes on the freeway. There were four on each side. And they still had traffic jams! His tired eyes took in the surroundings, the suburbs, the houses, and the many things that were so similar to Australia… yet so different.

"Sir, may I see your passport?"

The lady behind the counter would've been probably in her thirties. Although overweight, she had a beautiful face and Jared thought he even saw a hint of a smile. She'd asked him a massive amount of questions, leaving him feeling like he was back at school, and he didn't want to fail and be sent back to Australia.
"Bringing in any medication?"

"No, ma'am."
"Any food."
"No, ma'am" He hesitated. "Ah, ma'am. I've got a few leftover bikkies in my bag?"
The customs officer looked up at him with raised eyebrows. "Bikkies?"
Jared got nervous. "I suppose you'd call them cookies." He grabbed the package out of his backpack and showed her the item in question.
She laughed, and it was a genuine and beautiful laugh. Shaking her head, she replied, "Only you Australians could come up with a word like bikkies." After a moment's pause, she said, "They're all yours, honey." And she proceeded with taking his photo and fingerprints.
That hadn't been all that bad.

Fresh Beginnings - #Excerpt and #Giveaway

Blurb:

The small town of Hobart in Tasmania has witnessed many beginnings in recent years. At yet one more beginning, the wedding of a friend, Jared Fraser decides it’s time for some fresh beginnings to come his way… And he sets out for a holiday to the US to travel along the Route 66 in a motorhome.
Ivy Bennett thought leaving her boyfriend would be the hard part. It doesn’t take long to figure out how wrong she was. As she struggles with making a new start in her life, the last person she expects to lead her to happiness is a laid-back Australian on holiday.
Then the arrival of family friend Mia Levesque and her boyfriend, Josh, turns Jared’s holidays upside-down when he’s forced to play arbitrator between the two teenagers.

Excerpt:

It bugged Jared a little bit, that Ivy was holding back on something that was obviously occupying her mind. And that something had something to do with him, otherwise she would've told him. But then again, there were so many other things she was holding back, and again he reminded himself that it wasn't really any of his business. It didn't make it any easier though because, with every minute he spent with her, he became fonder of the girl driving him along the roads of America. There was no doubt he really enjoyed her company, their banter, her humour, even her cooking skills. He'd become very fond of them as well.

"Gonna tell me?" He tried again.

"There's nothing. Really."

Her smile didn't reach her eyes, and he knew she wasn't honest with him, but he let it go. He didn't want to ruin a perfect day.

When they arrived at their destination, they made a quick dash through the shopping centre before heading towards the campground. The site looked a lot more like what Jared was used to from Australia. The sites were located amongst grass with only a small spot of concrete for the motorhome and the table with two benches. There were trees around in all shapes and sizes, swaying in the breeze. Even at this late hour of the day, he was still able to hear birds chatting in the trees and insects humming between the flowers that dotted the grass. Jagged, snow-capped mountains were all around them and, as on the previous night, he took his time to take some photos. It was an amazing sight, and he had to pinch himself again that he was there.

He turned when he heard Ivy approaching.

"There's a little pool over in the small building next to the showers. I'd give anything for a little dip."

Slowly he raised his eyebrow.

She gently slapped his chest. "What? Aren't you Australians lovers of the water? Wouldn't you like to go swimming?"

He shook his head. "Nope."

A sigh escaped her lips.

"What's holdin' ya back?" he asked.

Her eyebrows shot up. "What's holding me back?"

He simply nodded.

"I've got no bathers."

Then he shrugged. It didn't make sense to him. "Anybody else in there?"

"No." She looked around. "Which doesn't surprise me, because there're not too many people camping here tonight, it seems."

"No one will notice that ya swimmin' in ya bra and knickers."

"Knickers?" She giggled.

Not sure whether this was a language thing or whether he'd offended her, Jared decided to stay quiet.

"Honey, I don't wear knickers. I don't have much money, but enough to buy decent underwear, which we call panties."

Heat rolled over his body and pooled in his groin. He knew! There weren't too many secrets in a small motorhome, and when she'd changed into her clothes that morning, he took a sneak peak. Of course he did. After all, he was only human.

"Wear the panties."

"I can't do that."

Putting some distance between them, he moved back a bit. The conversation rang a bell with him as he remembered this kind of argument between Mark and Sophie. It was the female logic that seemed to defy him.

"Well, in that case, I s'pose you won't go swimmin'."

Hands on hips she came closer. "You're not helping."

"Happy to give ya some of my panties."

She rolled her eyes. "Forget it."

The words weren't even spoken when she turned and stepped into the motorhome. He followed her in.

"Hey!"

With no chance to hold back, he had to grin when he saw her in the back of the motorhome half-naked.

"Do you mind?"

His grin got wider. "Actually, no I don't."

"Out," she screamed.

Bursting into laughter, he stepped out.

"Haven't you heard of knocking?"

"Honey blossom, how was I supposed to know ya goin' to strip in there?"

"I said I'd go for a swim."

He shook his head, still laughing, when he sat outside enjoying the scenery. There were a few noises coming from the inside, and he decided he'd be better off not knowing. A few minutes later, she stood in front of him with only a small towel wrapped around her body. At that moment, he was considering the idea that a swim wouldn't be that bad after all.

"If anybody approaches me inappropriately, it's your fault."

"Want me to come with and guard ya from all the bad Americans around?"

But all he heard was a humpf as she stomped away towards the pool. Watching her small body swaying, he thought how bad he could be if he were in there with her.

****

Ivy slid into the water and swam to the centre of the pool. The water was a perfect temperature, and she relished the cool feel of it over her body. Her gaze went to the pool entrance door a couple of times, although she told herself that was to see whether anybody else was coming in, but deep inside she knew, she was waiting for Jared. Leaning back, she lowered her head under water up to her mouth before she dunked her head under water. Hoping to clear her mind, she stayed like that for a few seconds. Jared was in her head and playing havoc with her emotions. She didn't like it. Okay, truth was, she did like it. She had liked his gaze when she'd undressed to only her underwear. And she had liked it the way he’d stared at her when she'd walked towards the pool. Thanks to the office window, she'd seen his open mouth before he'd rubbed his face with both hands.

The thought of the expression on his face spread warmth through her body, when she suddenly felt a hand on her thigh. She shrieked and whipped around, only to stare into Jared's eyes. His eyelashes were spiked from the water, his hair was plastered to his head, and a big grin spread across his face. He was only inches away, and she curled her arms around his neck as she snuggled into his embrace.

"Will ya keep it down," he said with a laugh.

"You scared me."

He leaned in, angling his head, and nuzzled just beneath her ear. Her body instantly came alive.

"I like American panties," he said as his hands moved further down her body.

Ivy choked back a giggle. "I'm sure they have them in Australia as well."

"Hmm. Can't say I've noticed."

"Liar!" She laughed.

Then he was still, and she tilted her head to meet his gaze. His face had become serious, and his eyes expressed more than fun in his eyes. Something different. Something she would have loved to explore. But it was the would have that made the difference to the situation. They were close to Salt Lake City, and their time together was drawing to an end. She sighed and became aware that she was having the time of her life with this stranger, who always carried a smile on his face. The Australian mate, who laughed at her silly jokes, or even laughed at life's simple pleasures. Her heart ached as part of her wanted this to never end. However, her heart was still bruised, and she knew that she didn't want sleep with Jared. Not out of regret. She was certain, she wouldn't regret a single second with him, but her heart would not cope with the beating afterwards. It would shatter into a thousand pieces the moment she had to say goodbye. This way, it'd be only a few hundred pieces—enough, she told herself, to pick up and put together again over time.

"We shouldn't do this," she heard herself whisper to him. It was like someone else was using her voice, it felt so distant and unreal.

"I know," he replied as he buried his face in the vulnerable spot beneath her ear to place another kiss.

As if on auto pilot, she angled her head again for him. How did he make her feel so good? She sighed, thinking how easily he made her feel attractive like no man had before.

"Jared."

He gently bit her in the shoulder before he moved to look at her. "I know." All of his disappointment was put into the two words.

"Another time, another place—"

"This could've been somethin' really good?" he finished.

She simply nodded. Not sure whether her tears were obvious on her wet face, she didn't make an effort to hold them back.

And she was awarded with another one of those kisses that went straight to her toes.

Yet, he only spoilt her for a brief moment. Jared placed his hands on her hips, and in one smooth motion lifted her up and threw her back into the water. Initially, she wasn't sure what was happening, but when she came back to the surface, she saw his typical grin.

With a pretend pout, she swam away. As expected, Jared came towards her and, as soon as he was close enough, she tried her best to dunk him. It was a fruitless attempt though. He was much stronger than she was. Even though, she had the time of her life being immature for a while, she had fun like she hadn't had in a long time.

Excerpt:
"G'day!" He stared at her and for some reason something tugged at his heart. Not that he wanted that. He had no room for women, let alone American ones. They all were on earth to make life complicated. Mark was constantly running around for Sophie or Hope, even though Mark's wife was one in a million and little Hope was simply adorable, especially when she was asleep.
"Ya know it's dangerous to hitch a ride," he finally said when she was still quiet.
She stared at him for a moment, but then replied with the typical American twang in her voice. "I know you said something, but I have no idea what."
He chuckled. "It is dangerous to hitchhike," he repeated with exaggerated pronunciation.
The woman stepped a bit closer to the window. "Are you from Austria?"
He laughed aloud.
"Australia, I meant," she added, seemingly embarrassed by the mistake.
"I am indeed." He watched her looking ahead towards the horizon. "So you wanna hitch a ride?"
Jared had a feeling she didn't want to, but her current situation didn't give her many choices. There they were in the middle of nowhere, with the next place a fair few miles away.
"Name's Jared," he said and then he opened the door and walked around the motorhome. Leaning against the vehicle, he looked at her. She was pretty. Thin, but pretty. When her brown eyes met his, he experienced another one of those heart tugs and wasn't impressed at all. He tried to look right past her. It wasn't happening though. They were like magnets.
"Jared," he repeated and held out his hand.
Her look went right past him into the distance, and he assumed she was fighting with herself, part of her wanting to get off the road, the other part being worried.
"Anybody else travelling with you?" she asked quietly.
He shook his head. "Nope."
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and, after a brief moment, reached for his hand. "Nice meeting you."
Acknowledging that she wasn't much into sharing details like her name, he opened the door for her. "Where are ya headin'?" he asked.
A smile started in her eyes and played with the corner of her lips. He felt himself smiling back. There was an appreciation in her smile.
"Could you drop me off at the next stop?" she asked hesitantly.
"Most certainly, but where are ya headin?"
She shrugged. "Kingman?"
"Is that on this road?"
Nodding, she said. "Yes, it is. It should be less than a hundred miles along this highway."
"Then hop in."
She turned to get into the motorhome, and he took in her small stature and the narrow shoulders which seemed even smaller in her tight, red T-shirt. Jared noticed her cargoes were just hanging onto her hips. A nice steak wouldn't go astray on these hips. Suddenly she stopped and moved to look at him. "Thank you," she whispered.
"No worries mate."
Jared held her gaze and wasn't sure what to say or do. She simply stood in front of him like frozen.
"My name is Ivy," she said after a long moment.
"Hedera. An evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plant in the family Araliaceae."
With a frown, she stared at him. "I really didn't understand that one."
He laughed. "Sorry, mate. I got carried away. I'm a landscaper. Ivy is a climbing plant." Scratching the back of his head, he added, slightly self-conscious, "And, of course, a beautiful name."
There was a small laugh as she stepped into the motorhome. He went around and slid behind the wheel before driving back onto the road. There was a long silence, and Jared wasn't really sure what to do or say. Usually, he was good with silence. Actually, he loved it. But at that moment, the silence made him uncomfortable.
"So, what brings ya out into the middle of the sticks?"
When there was no reply, he turned and looked at her. There was a big frown on her face, and he sighed.
"I thought you all speak English as well?"
"We do," she said with a slight giggle. "But I'm not so sure about you Australians."
With a grin he replied, "Now, don't be cheeky, Ivy."
"Don't bite the hand that feeds you, my mom always said." She laughed. "No way would I make fun of you."
"So, you're expectin' a meal as well?"
There was a moment of silence again, and he glanced over. The smile was gone and panic was written all over her face.
"I… I didn't—"
Quickly he reached out for her hand. "I'm pulling your leg." And when she didn't reply again, he muttered, "This thing with you Americans not understanding English is turning into a problem. I was kiddin'."
"Pulling your leg?" She shook her head. "Never heard of it."
A bark of laughter filled the small space. "Anyway. Talkin' about food. There's a small place ahead. Want some lunch?"

The idea behind "FRESH BEGINNINGS"

Happy Tuesday everyone!

While Tuesday Tales are on a summer break, I take the opportunity to tell you a bit about FRESH BEGINNINGS, which is going to be released "today" US time, "tomorrow" Australian time.

Fresh Beginnings is the third book in the Beginnings series and takes Jared to the US, where he travels through five states in a motorhome.

Where did I come up with the idea?

My husband and I took our daughters to the US last year, and we did exactly that. We hired a motorhome and drove wherever the road took us -  Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, north into Utah (crossing the Colorado River!), Salt Lake City, Boise, then back to the west to Oregon, the beautiful town of Sister(s), Crater Lake, where my girls experienced snow for the first time, seeing the F15 Jets in Klamath Falls (those who know me know I love airplanes), across the mountains (more snow storms) to the coast and then south to San Francisco, Yosemite and back to LA.
It was amazing!
We've got lots of wonderful memories and as we prepared our photo album we got side-tracked so easily by "Can you remember when we went to ....".
So basically, "Fresh Beginnings" is a romance story written "around" our itinerary.
I hope you will like the story.
Here some photos from our travels, which you will quite possibly recognise in the story again.

Grand Canyon - Impressive!

Temple in Salt Lake City.

Driving from East to West Oregon. Interesting to say the least.
Bench at a RV Park near Sisters/Bend. Loved that place. Loved the bench
.
Information Centre at Crater Lake. And yes, we did have to use the tunnel, due to approx. two meters of snow. Walking through "the tunnel" was eerie.
Fighter Jets at Klamath Falls. Woohoo that was one crazy experience.

Snow storm in Oregon on our way to the coast.
Yeah !!!!
Great "zoo" in Oregon.
One mysterious Building in Eureka.
Northern California Coast.

Little treat near the caravan park close to Monterey - A car race track! Laguna Seca

Big Sur.

It's so windy at the coast, the trees/bushes have no chance to grow "straight up".

THANKS AMERICA !!!

My trip to the US in photos

So the story is ....

Great "zoo" in Oregon.

"Mystery Trails" at the norther Californian Coast. Going up the mountain in a Cable Car. Eeek!

One mysterious Building in Eureka.
Wikipedia:
The Carson Mansion is a large Victorian house located in Old Town, Eureka, California. Regarded as one of the highest executions of American Queen Anne Style architecture, the home is "considered the most grand Victorian home in America." It is one of the most written about and photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps, in the United States. Originally the home of one of Northern California's first major lumber barons, it has housed the Ingomar Club, a private members-only club, since 1950. Although the front and south-side elevations may be viewed easily from the public street and sidewalk, the home and grounds are never open to the general public.
Northern California Coast.

The amazing Golden Gate Bridge!

Thanks to fellow Astraea Press author, the wonderful Leah Sanders.
Thanks to all we met during our travels, to those who helped us, talked to us and those who just in a very friendly manner smiled at us.
THANKS AMERICA.
