Cecelia Ahern - The Time of my Life

Publisher: Harper Collins

ISBN: 9780007350445

My rating: 4/5

Lucy Silchester has an appointment with her life – and she’s going to have to keep it.
Lying on Lucy Silchester’s carpet one day when she returns from work is a gold envelope. Inside is an invitation – to a meeting with Life. Her life. It turns out she's been ignoring it and it needs to meet with her face to face.
It sounds peculiar, but Lucy’s read about this in a magazine. Anyway, she can’t make the date: she’s much too busy despising her job, skipping out on her friends and avoiding her family.
But Lucy’s life isn’t what it seems. Some of the choices she’s made – and stories she’s told – aren’t what they seem either. From the moment she meets the man who introduces himself as her life, her stubborn half-truths are going to be revealed in all their glory – unless Lucy learns to tell the truth about what really matters to her. (CeceliaAhern.ie)

My thoughts

I cannot believe, I'd had the book on my desk for over a year before I started reading, but after the previous Ahern books I'd been a bit hesitant!
Anyway ... beautifully written and thought provoking would be a summary of this review!

Lucy, the main character, meets "her life", a grumpy guy who is trying to improve her life. Her life: she's broken up with her partner, lost her job and now lives in a small apartment, growing more and more distant to her family and friends.

I didn't really like Lucy that much, although very realistic, I couldn't really warm to her. Yet, I loved "her life". He was funny, witty and had some really good lines.

Bottom line, I'd say, this is Cecelia Ahern at her best again. The story makes you think, not only about what you've just read, but your own life, and stays with you well and truly after you've finished the book. I laughed, I blinked away tears - and loved it!

It was a special time just for her and her dad. She went over to the window. Jeremy was outside chatting with Murray, who was already in his good clothes and waiting for Hollie. She went outside, and gave Jeremy a gentle kiss on the cheek.
“Hi. I didn’t expect you here at all,” she said. Jeremy gently put his arm around her and returned the kiss.
“I’d better leave you two to it,” Murray said with a smile and went back inside. “Remember we have to leave soon, love.”
Hollie smiled back at him. “Won’t be long, Dad.”
“I just wanted to put a little something under your Christmas tree. I hope you have one,” Jeremy said.
“Yes, I’ve just finished decorating it. Come on in.”
He smiled. “Just?”

#SweetSat Sample - 16/06/12

This is a sample from my first book "Sweet Dreams, Miss England"

Nicky is my main character. She lives in London with two young girls. She's just made friends with two Irish women who are now in London to enjoy the sights with two of their -male- friends.

“Yes, that’s my husband.”
Daniel raised his eyebrows. “I had no idea, honestly. So he’s in the States and you’re living here with your kids?”
“Yes.”
“Do you still love him?”
Nicky hesitated. She was quite tempted to give him an honest answer, an answer she thought he deserved, but she had no idea where he was going with this questioning, so she lapsed back to her old self and put up her safety wall.
“This is none of your business.” Nicky was about to stand up when he took hold of her hand and held her back.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. I am really sorry,” he said.
She looked at him and knew he was sincere with his apology. “Sorry, Daniel. People have been digging into my private life for such a long time and so often, purely for gossip and financial reasons, it has become very difficult to trust people.”
Nicky sensed Daniel’s look on her. She was expecting him to comment on what had just been said, but he remained silent. It was an odd feeling, a feeling as though he was about to take her in his arms, but the moment soon passed. She was relieved, because the friendship and the trust that came with it were still too new. He was still holding her hand, though, and Nicky made no attempts to take it away. She liked to feel his gentle hands on hers.
“Love is such a big word,” she said. “People just use the word, without even thinking what it actually means. Most of us don’t even know what it means, until we’ve found our true love. ”
“My grandfather always says: ‘you know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.’”
Nicky smiled at the sentiment. “I think I might like your grandfather.” She was well aware of the fact that Daniel had caused her many sleepless nights over the last few weeks.

Rachel Gibson - No Man of Mine

Publisher: Avon

ISBN: 9780061579110

My rating: 3/5

Autumn Haven's Las Vegas "to-do" list said to catch a show and play the slots—not wake up married to a sexy jerk like Sam Leclaire. The first moment she saw him eyeing her like a luscious piece of the dessert buffet, her usually responsible self told her run. And she did—right into the wildest fantasy weekend of her life. But Monday morning jolted her back to reality and before she could say "pass the coffee" Sam was gone.
Now a successful wedding planner, Autumn she hasn't clapped eyes on the heart-breaking hockey superstar for over two years... until she organizes his teammate's "Special Day," where Sam makes a BIG play to pick up where he left off! But she has vowed any man of hers plays for keeps. Is Sam the man for her or does she banish him to the sin bin forever? (www.rachelgibson.com)

My thoughts

This story reads like a little stream of water trickling away in front of you - you like it, but it doesn't get your heart racing.
Autumn and Sam spent a few days and nights years earlier in Vegas, got married, got divorced, and Autumn ended up raising their son on her own, though with financial help from Sam and some overnight stays.

Autumn is a lovely character, a struggling mum trying to establish her business as a wedding / events planner. Sam is the typical "over-alpha-male" and  Hockey player with the Chinooks. After five years they meet again at a wedding. Wait, meet again? I thought they had a son together and Sam was taking him for overnight stays? Yes, I didn't get that one.

Anyway, they meet again and the whole "Why?" with-himself-conversation starts. And I don't get it either ... he left her in the hotel room, because she wasn't his type?  Then of course, Autumn's with-herself-conversation that she couldn't trust him. I kinda get that, once bitten twice shy ...

So - all in all, not the best Gibson story, but a lighthearted read for a weekend in front of the fire or at the beach .... don't expect too much though. If you haven't read a Gibson book yet, I'd recommend "Daisy's Back in Town"

WIP - next Chapter

This is part of chapter two of my current WIP.
I'd appreciate any comments.
Even better constructive critism.
Best of all would be comments if you like it.

Emma’s shift was only starting in an hour’s time, but she took a lift from Jack as she usually did on Mondays. Jack worked an extra hour each Monday and Friday to cover for a longer lunch when he was allowed to use the gym in the basement.

“Excuse me?”

Emma turned around and looked into Nadine’s beautiful eyes.

“Good morning, Nadine. It was Nadine wasn’t it?”

The girl’s face lit up. “Yes, but Mum always called me Naddie.”

“May I call you Naddie?”

Emma filled her glass with more orange juice. She always used the extra hour to enjoy a good breakfast at the hotel – thank goodness it was part of her arrangement. She studied the little girl, who was holding on to her oversized doll, which was wearing the same outfit as Nadine – pink t-shirt imprinted with ‘My beautiful Princess’, a denim skirt with a Barbie on it surrounded by lots of pink hearts in all sizes, pink shiny sandals and the brown hair done up in a pony tail.

“Where are your grandparents, Naddie?”

“Still in the room. Talking on the phone. Grandmother is always on the phone,” little Nadine added.

“Do you think you’re allowed to have a bit of breakfast with me?”

Nadine nodded overenthusiastically and sat down opposite Emma.

“Do they know where you are?”

The little head moved up and down and with her eyes wide open she said, “Told Grandpa.”

“I like your outfit,” Emma said while she took another glass and filled it with juice.

Nadine took one of the rolls. “Mum’s friend gave it to me for my birthday.”

“I take it you like Barbie.”

“Yes!” And that was literally the keyword to get Nadine started. She was bubbling with information about Barbie and which Barbie she had at home, which one she would like to have, about Ken and not to forget all the Barbie movies. Emma felt a bit overwhelmed by all these details but enjoyed listening to her new friend, when she all of sudden heard Teresa’s firm voice.

“Nadine!”

Nadine’s face suddenly lost its spark when she saw her grandmother.

“My apologies,” Teresa stopped in front of Emma. She hesitated. “Emma, wasn’t it?”

“Yes ma’am.”

“I do apologies for Nadine. I have no idea where she has her manners from ...”

“Ma’am, there’s no need to apologise. I really enjoyed her company.”

But Teresa had already grabbed Nadine by the wrist and pulled her off the seat. Then she turned to Emma again.

“Say Emma, I need someone to look after Nadine this afternoon. Who would be the best one to contact here in the hotel to organise this for me?”

Emma was a bit stumped by this question. She stared at Teresa Gibbs and was a bit intimidated by her. Mrs Gibbs glared like her old English teacher from fifth grade with the hair that probably used to be black and had now faded into grey tied up in a bun, her face reading like a map of time with every line a memory of her life, her grey eyes dulled with age, lifeless and hollow, and her mouth tight as if a nice word had never crossed these lips. Not to mention her clothes, which Emma thought, would be older than Emma herself.

“Well I suppose the reception, which will be me in about fifteen minutes.”

“Can I leave that in your capable hands to organise this?”

“Well ... I suppose ... I mean ... that’s a new one for me, but I suppose, yes.”

Teresa grew impatient. “Emma, is that a yes or no?”

“It’s a yes ma’am,” Emma replied slightly embarrassed but yet with more confidence this time, even though she had no idea how to handle this request.

“Thanks, Emma. I would need someone between one and two-thirty.” And with that she left. Emma quickly gave a little wave to Nadine before she was out of her sight.

She finished her breakfast, returned her dishes to the kitchen and made her way to the reception area where she caught up with Jacqueline before she took over from her at the reception. It seemed like a quiet morning as she glanced over to the hotel lobby. The spacious entrance lit up with crystal chandeliers in contrast to the contemporary colours of the sand-coloured marble floor and the walnut panelling on the walls. Again, Emma gazed envious at the chocolate brown coloured furnishings which were according to Management strategically selected and arranged to allow a visual play of light and space. She loved that slogan. It had so many words, but really didn’t say anything at all.

Nightshifts at the reception were usually done by Jacqueline, who tried to study Business Management during the day.

 “Hey, Jacqui?”

Jacqui turned towards Emma. “Hmm?”

“How do I get a babysitter for this afternoon?”

Jacqui just stared at Emma and slowly lifted her eyebrows. “A babysitter?”

“Yes, for Room 502. They need a babysitter for their granddaughter.”

“Geez, Em, you’ve just given me a fright.”

Emma rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right – as if.”

Emma followed Jacqui as she went over to the office and reached for a drawer and removed a little folder.

“You should find all the details in here. But good luck. I’m not sure whether they can provide anybody on such short notice.”

“Great!” Emma said wryly.

Jacqui padded Emma’s arm. “You’ll be right. Jack should be here any minute and he can give you a hand.”

Emma took the folder and quickly flicked through it. “Thanks Jacqui,” she mumbled, but when she lifted her head she saw Jack standing in front of her – and almost dropped the folder it gave her such a fright.

“Geez, Jack! You’ve scared the crap out of me.”

“A hand with what?”

“I need a babysitter.”

Jack raised his eyebrows and a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “No worries. I look after you.”

Nicky had another quick word with Robert while trying to connect the mobile to the charger. All was going well and they were looking forward to seeing her the following weekend. Robert didn’t mention Shane so she assumed there were some issues and she avoided asking as well. They quickly said their goodbyes. Troubled, she looked out across the sea again. She knew too well that things weren’t going well on the other side of the Atlantic. She wished she could just reach out and be there.

Nicky had just come out of the shower when Daniel knocked at the door. She opened the door slightly and saw him smiling at her, with a towel her only cover. Then her mobile rang and she went back into the room. It was Shane, but she chose not to answer it. When she turned around, Daniel had already stepped into the room with her.

“My timing seems to be just perfect,” he said with a big grin. Nicky rolled her eyes at him.

“Okay – just a quick question. I just talked to Sash. Vonnie, her family, Erin, her little princess and Alex are camping down near Cork for a few days and are wondering whether we would like to join them on the way home. Sash could bring all the stuff,” Daniel told her.

“You’re kidding me, aren’t you?” Nicky was slightly baffled. “Camping?” Her eyes grew big.

Daniel moved closer. “Don’t tell me you’ve never been camping.” He smiled.

“You don’t expect me to sleep in a tent, on a mattress out there with all sorts of crawling little bugs,” Nicky sighed.

“Miss England, it’ll be great. I promise. You’ll camp with me and Sash in the tent and you’ll be fine. Come on.”

She thought about it and looked into his begging eyes.

“You owe me big time for this, Mr. Callaghan!” She quickly adjusted the towel that was in danger of slipping.

He donned a smile of anticipation, took her face into his hand and softly touched his lips to hers.

“They say nothing beats sitting by the campfire under the stars.” He looked into her blue eyes before brushing her lips with his again.

“You’re taking advantage of the situation here, Mr. Callaghan,” Nicky said softly.

He smiled conspiringly. “Shh,” he whispered into her ear and took her hands off the towel. He kissed her gently as he laid her down on the bed. Nicky closed her eyes in pure happiness as he caressed her body softly with his lips. It was an overwhelming sensation that made her give into her feelings.

Her heart was beating as if she had just run a marathon and it took all her strength to enter the hotel and ask for his room number. The hotel lift seemed to take forever to finally reach the third floor. She took a deep breath and knocked at the door. Nicky vaguely heard him say to come in.

“Hey, Miss England. I thought I was under strict instructions: Dinner only and that at a restaurant.”

Nicky felt her knees giving way underneath her. She felt her body shaking and wasn’t enjoying being there.

“Daniel, I cannot go out for dinner with you tonight,” she said very softly.

He moved closer to her, sensing that something was wrong.

“Daniel, I am married and even though my husband lives in the States, it doesn’t change the fact that we’re married.” Nicky felt the tears running down her face. “The thing is, though, since I’ve met you, all I do is think of you. I can’t get you out of my head. I keep thinking of the way you held me when we danced. I cannot sleep because I remember the way you kissed me.” She wiped away a few tears, and with a big sigh, went on, “I just cannot have dinner with you, because I have to do what is right and that means I shouldn’t see you again. I am really, really sorry.”

Daniel just looked at her for a while. The silence made her nervous and uneasy. Nicky wanted to say something, but he held his finger in front of her lips to stop her. He took her face in his hands and looked right at her.

“You did come, though. Please don’t go,” he whispered. He moved forward to her and gently kissed her. Nicky moved back, but he held onto her hand and pulled her closer. He kissed her again and she felt herself slowly giving in to him. She had yearned for his kisses for such a long time and didn’t want to fight them any longer. They had already made her too weak. He touched her neck with his lips, gently moving his hands down her arms to her waist, slipping his hands under her shirt, caressing her back. His kisses felt like an exciting rush to her body, something so gentle, but at the same time wanting, like she hadn’t known before. He looked into her eyes as if to get her okay, picked her up in his arms and eased her onto the bed. Nicky’s body trembled as Daniel kissed every inch of her body while removing her clothes. She enjoyed the way she was being loved in such a caring yet passionate way.

Nicky followed Siobhan’s directions to find Daniel. The door was open and she watched him as he lay on the couch with the blanket just covering his lower part of his body. Nicky quietly cursed Siobhan for putting her in this situation. She gazed at his well-trained chest rising with every breath. There it was again, this feeling she couldn’t control. All she wanted was to touch him, but all she was hoping for was for someone to get her out of this room. How could she find the strength to resist him when his nearness alone confused her?

She gave a quick intake of breath for courage and went over to Daniel to sit on the little tea table nearby. She quietly said his name, but there was no response. She carefully touched him and said his name again. There was a moan and he started to wake up. He rubbed his hands over his face to help him open his eyes. As soon as he saw Nicky though, a big smile appeared on his face.

          “Good morning, Miss England.”

Nicky, still a bit hesitant, smiled back at him. “My little Emily usually wakes me with a coffee and a kiss,” he said cheekily.

Nicky smiled and shook her head as she straightened up. She went back into the kitchen, and grabbed a cup and some coffee.

Siobhan looked across the room at her. “Don’t ask! Apparently there’s a right way to wake up Mr. Callaghan.”

She was about to go back into Daniel’s room, when Siobhan gave her two biscuits. “He loves his HobNobs.”

Daniel hadn’t moved an inch, but sat up when he saw Nicky. She smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“I had no idea, I had such strong competition,” she said, giving him the cup of coffee and the biscuits.

“Are you flirting with me, Miss England?”

“I wouldn’t like to hurt Emily’s feelings. So, no, I’m not. I just do things the way they’re done around here,” she said cheekily.

“She usually rubs my back in the bath as well,” he grinned.

“Don’t push it, Mr. Callaghan,” Nicky replied on her way out. “And you’d better get ready if you want to give me a lift to the airport.”

She was still puzzled by Shane’s plans to have them over, so she rang Jamie after dinner. She apologised for ringing the night before Chris’s birthday, but Jamie just laughed. He had gone out with friends. Nicky shook her head. She should have known. Chris took every opportunity to have a drink with his mates. Both women went through the details again for the next day, when Jamie noticed that there was something Nicky wanted to talk about.

“What’s up, Nicky? I have a feeling something’s bothering you.”

“You just know me too well, Jamie.” Nicky giggled.

“This, in itself, is a huge accomplishment, you have to admit. Anyway, what’s up?”

“It’s the holidays again. I’m sorry to bring it up before Chris’s birthday, but it’s really bothering me.”

“I have noticed, but I really cannot understand why.”

“Jamie, the reason we came back to London was that I was always on my own or with the kids. Shane was constantly somewhere else, and when he was at home, it felt like he wasn’t really.”

“Nicky, perhaps he knows that, and just wants to have a good holiday.”

“There’s something else.” Nicky was silent for a while and Jamie wasn’t really sure whether to push the issue or just wait for Nicky to keep on going.

“What is it, Nicky?” Jamie finally asked carefully.

“I’ve met someone. And I shouldn’t tell you, because nothing happened. I only met this person, but the thing is I cannot get him out of my mind.”

          Jamie was quiet.

“Are you still there, Jamie? Please tell me you’re not going to give me a lecture or anything.”

          “I assume he’s from Ireland.”

          “Yes.”

“Did you meet him in Dublin?”

“Yes.” Nicky told Jamie the whole story about how she had met Daniel, but stopped short of the kiss. Jamie listened and absorbed each detail of the story unfolding in front of her. She had had no idea.

“They invited me to come over again in two weeks for a festival, and I would love to go,” Nicky finished her story.

“Wow, just let that all sink in first,” Jamie said.

“I’m sorry, really sorry to dump this on you,” Nicky said timidly.

“Ok, so you’re obviously having a great time with these folks and I’m sure we can look after the girls for that weekend if, and only if, you promise me not to do anything foolish with Daniel. But I still have no idea what’s that got to do with going to L.A.”

“I don’t know either. I’m all confused. I suppose I can only think of the six months we spent there last year which was quite a debacle. I sometimes wonder if Shane likes the girls at all or whether he still loves me.”

Jamie tried to console her best friend. She thought that Shane did indeed still love her otherwise he wouldn’t have wanted her to come over. He might still have some castings planned, but not each day. She asked Nicky for her word that she would look into it again and possibly see a travel agent to have a few trips organised for her stay in the U.S.

“How about the weekend?” Nicky asked shyly.

“You’re a dag, my best friend,” Jamie was laughing. “Yes, you can go to Dublin and, no, I will not tell a soul.”

“Oh, I just love you, Jamie Carter.”

Jamie grew serious. “Nicky, if I find out that you’re not sticking to the deal, trust me, you will be in deep trouble.”

“I’ll be a good girl,” Nicky promised. “I’ll see you tomorrow, nice and early.”

Nicky went to bed, very content to know she was going to Dublin again and, quite to her surprise, there was no apprehension and unsettling nerves, just sheer excitement in her.

Sample Sunday - Sweet Dreams, Miss England

Okay - I'm getting the hang of this.

So last week you've read about the shopping. Today's Sample is the same day later that evening.

ENJOY!

On her way back to the group she bumped into Daniel when she was casually brushing off some crumbs from the chips she had been nibbling.
“You’re making a habit out of this, Miss England,” he said.
“It’s not really my fault that you have a tendency to always be in my way, Mr. Callaghan.”
Daniel laughingly shook his head. “By the way, thanks for a great day!”
“I don’t believe that one bit. Going shopping all day must be a man’s worst nightmare.”
“I have a feeling it was for you as well. You don’t come across as a big shopper. So thanks!”

Nicky blushed, but tried to cover it up by brushing the rest of the crumbs off her shirt. She felt his finger under her chin. He lifted it up gently and moved forward towards her. She heard his quiet words, “I could go shopping every day with a guide like you,” and then he gently kissed her lips. Nicky’s heart raced but instead of pulling away she opened her lips under his, inviting him to move ahead. For a very brief moment the world around her didn’t exist and she was overwhelmed with a rush of emotions.

“Hey, DJ.” Daniel immediately moved a step back, and turned towards Alex.
Nicky a bit unsure, and still in a daze, went back to brushing off non-existent crumbs.
“This really stinks. DJ, have you got any change of English pounds? I swear they’d be better off with Euros.” Daniel laughed. It was so typical of Alex to be short of money.
“Sorry, mate, I just have this ten pound note. Will that do?”
“Hey, guys, did I just interrupt something?” Alex’s smile turned into a grin.
Nicky said, “I’d better go back to the girls.”
“Sorry, girls, but I’ve really got to go home. It’s kind of late and I have a busy day ahead of me tomorrow. Not to mention a long way back to the car.”
          “Oh, really? Already?”
“Yes, I’m sorry. I still have to catch the train to the car, which will take me a while. But it was great catching up with you guys. Thank you so much for calling and inviting me. I had a great day.”
“So did we. Do you want us to come with you?”
“No, you’re fine. You better celebrate Erin’s birthday in style.”
“Thank you so much for being our guide; it was great. We definitely have to show you around Dublin next time you’re over.”
Siobhan added, “There’ll be the Kildare Derby Festival soon, and DJ’s party. You just have to come then. Bring the girls. Mark will look after them. No worries.”
“It’s not that easy. Shane wants us to come to L.A. over the summer.”
“Oh, wow, send the kids over and you can follow later. Honestly, you don’t want to miss this.”
“And I have a feeling DJ would love your company as well,” Erin said with a grin.
Nicky waved off the comment. “You two are watching too many daytime soaps. I’ll let you know next week.”

She gave both a hug. Daniel and Alex were still at the bar, so she waved them goodbye. Daniel quickly struggled through the crowd over to her.

“So you continually bump into people, but you also have a habit of leaving on the drop of a hat as well.”

“Sorry, but I have to go.”
“Will you come for breakfast tomorrow?”
“Sorry, I can’t. I have to get a few things organised for the week.”

“I’d like to see you again. I still owe you a dinner.”

“Daniel, I’m married. It’s not that easy.”

“Things are what you make of them. Things are never easy if you don’t face them.”

Nicky tried to avoid looking at him, but Daniel lifted her chin. “There’s the Derby Festival in ….”

“….. in Kildare in a few weeks, I know.”

“You know about it, so you’ll come, won’t you? You can camp at my place – I’ve got a spare bedroom,” he said with a grin.

Nicky just sighed, gave him a quick kiss and left. Once she felt the cool summer air outside, she wasn’t able to hold back the tears. How could she let herself get into a situation like this? She should have known better, but she still did. She definitely had to talk to Jamie!

On a secluded beach in North Carolina, three lonely people find hope in each other.

Trish Evers is an artist and single mother, who has inherited her grandmother's Bed and Breakfast in a North Carolina coastal town. Though she must sell the house, she decides to bring her daughter to the beach for one last summer vacation in her childhood town.
Bella is a six-year-old girl who has Down syndrome. Rejected by her father, Trish, is the only parent she's ever known. Bella likes to explore the beach and has a tendency to wander off. One day, Bella goes exploring on her own, and Trish finds her in the company of an intriguing stranger.
Dan Conway is a U.S. Marine, who had been born into a family of Marines. Now blind as a result of combat injuries and unable to "suit up," he feels he no longer has a purpose in life. He's come home to the beach, where he spends his days in solitude. Dan must learn to believe in himself and to love life again, which he begins to do through his interactions with Bella and Trish. When a hurricane strikes, and Bella wanders off again, her only hope for rescue is Dan.
Working within the confines of his blindness, he must overcome his fear of failure and recall his training in order to search for the little girl and bring her to safety.  (amazon.com)

My thoughts

This is a kind of story readers can only dream of.  I loved the book and yes, it's another one of those where I fell in love with the cover, BUT this time I read the blurb before purchasing it.

I do have to admit though that it took me a while until I got into the story. The constant breaks made me put it aside very often, personally I thought they interrupted the flow and it got irritating. It didn't do much harm to the story though. Springsteen did a great job creating a plot with a single mother of a down syndrome daughter falling in love with a blind marine who was injured while in Afganistan. The characters are believable and the issues of down syndrome and blindness highlighted but not "put on too thick". It was a book that leaves you wanting more and for the book not to finish.

Give it a go, it's well worth it

Jill Shalvis - Animal Magnetism

Publisher: Berkley Sensation

ISBN: 978 0425239810

My rating: 3.5/5

Sunshine, Idaho, is a small and sunny town - the perfect home for man and beast. Well, maybe not for man, as pilot-for-hire Brady Miller discovers when his truck is rear-ended by what appears to be Noah's Ark.

As the co-owner of the town's only kennel, Lilah Young has good reason to be distracted behind the wheel - there are puppies, a piglet, and a duck in her Jeep. but she doesn't find it hard to focus on the sexy, gorgeous stranger she's collided with.

Lilah has lived in sunshine all her life, and though Brady is just passing through, he has her abandoning her instincts and giving in to a primal desire. It's Brady's nature to resist being tied down, but there's something about Lilah and her menagerie - both  animal and human - that keeps him coming back for more ... (from the back of the book cover).

My thoughts

My second Shelves book, though I didn't get engrossed in it as much as the first one I read (Simply Irresistible) this one was still a page turner. Brady comes to Sunshine following an invite by his foster brothers Dell and Adam who run a veterinary centre and gets rear ended by Lilah on the very first morning he arrives ... and can't get his eyes and hands off her for the rest of his stay in Sunshine.

“Animal Magnetism” is a character driven story rather than a plot, but like “Simply Irresistible”, the characters felt real to me. I loved Lilah and felt connected straight away – she got hurt and only surrounds herself with people she knows and trusts sounds very (!) familiar to me. Brady is Shalvis’ typical male character, ticking all the right boxes, yet brought to his knees by the cutest dog, Twinkles. (Great scene when Brady tries to get twinkles to go to sleep :-)

This is the first book in another series by Shalvis and I do hope Dell will be next. I loved the little scene between him and Jade when they come to visit Lilah.

Favourite quote.... many!
“Let me get this straight. You can’t stop barking to save your own life, but you can roll over?”

Maddie Moore's whole life needs a makeover.
In one fell swoop, Maddie loses her boyfriend (her decision) and her job (so not her decision). But rather than drowning her sorrows in bags of potato chips, Maddie leaves L.A. to claim the inheritance left by her free-spirited mother - a ramshackle in nestled in the little coastal town of Lucky Harbor, Washington.
starting over won't be easy. Yet Maddie sees the potential for a new home and a new career - if only she can convince her two half-sisters to join her in the adventure. But convincing Tara and Chloe will be difficult because the inn needs a big makeover too.
The contractor Maddie hires is a tall, dark-haired hottie whose eyes - and mouth - are making it hard for her to remember that she's sworn off men. Even harder will be Maddie's struggles to overcome the past, though she's about to discover that there's no better place to call home than Lucky Harbor. (from the back of the book)

My thoughts

This book arrived during the holidays and for the sake of having nothing better to do I unpacked it and started to read - and literally didn't stop until it was finished.

This was my first book by Jill Shalvis and I’m glad I bought it. It’s the first book in a trilogy about three women inheriting an inn on the Washington coast – inherited from a mother the main character, Maddie, hardly knew.

I liked Maddie straight away – with her little flaws, the love for chips, tick to have her food not touching on the plate and the way she just blurts out what comes to mind. I liked her even more once I found out her history and what had brought her to this place. I liked her the way she slowly fell in love with Jax, though only taking tiny steps and here and there big steps back. Shalvis did a great job with Maddie, she’s real!

Jax ... well who would not like Jax! He is sexy, helpful, literally a man of many trades, yet also dealing with a few issues from the past. I really liked the way he supported and helped Maddie. Though in all fairness, I’ve got to admit, towards the end he did come across as a bit of an “über-guy” ...

I won’t comment on the sisters quite yet. I liked Chloe, but I suppose Jill will tell her story in one of the next books.

Favourite Quote:

With a sigh, she picked up her knitting instead of inhaling any more food and continued where she'd left off last night. "In, wrap around," she said to herself. "Pull out."

"You know." Chloe said, licking some batter off her thumb. "The way you knit always sounds a little dirty. I bet if you knitted in earshot of a guy, you'd get laid for sure."
